MONART ART CLASS

Spring 2001

Jonathan is taking a Monart Art class. Here is the work he did in this class.

His comments on each piece are in quotes.

April 2, 2001 - first class

"This was my first time and I didn't know how the gold part worked and I put a little too much on, but the rest looks nice."

April 16, 2001 - second class

"I was still learning and I put a little too much straight near its hat to make it fit under the umbrella, but the rest looked kind of nice."

April 23, 2001 - third class

Jonathan titled this piece: "Alert, Fruit Bowl Alert! Fishing grapes are taking over!"

"It is the best one I did so far and the grapes fell down like it was fishing. Someone left a tip there. There was a mouth of grapes and grapes were about to eat some bananas that were about to fall into a grape mouth."

April 30, 2001 - fourth class

Jonathan titled this one: "Can you see anything but gold on me?"

"There is a parrot but it was so hard to see that it really looks like floating gold eye, beaks holding grapes. And don't forget the camouflaged tree where I signed my name."

May 7, 2001 - fifth class

"I didn't color this because I didn't think it looked too good. The background clouds didn't look too good, and the wings didn't look too good, and the tushy didn't look too good, but the rest was great."

May 14, 2001 - sixth class

"I made modern art. It isn't supposed to look real. It was good aside from the fact it wasn't supposed to look real. I was supposed to be from South Africa but I made it Jewish, I suppose, with the necklace and things."

May 21, 2001 - seventh class

Jonathan titled this "A Howl in the Desert"

"To do this picture, I had to think about a lot of detail for which things to go in front and in back of the other things. Some of the colors like the floor and sky colors were made up of mixtures of pastels: chalk and oil. Chalk pastels work good because they fall and give scraps where you don't want them to be, but it's a dusty place in the desert and they give a great personality. I meant to make the coyote grey, but the color was not what I thought, and I was in a hurry so I couldn't keep on choosing."

June 4, 2001 - last class

"This was my last Monart class and I am very sad. But we got to do something extra special. Everyone in the class was looking forward to it. We were going to make a picture and trace it onto a T-shirt. The picture we put on it looked kind of Indian style. It reminded me of one of the Maize Mazes we went to. It told the story of a mysterious calendar. It had a face and marks of what happened to it around it. It looked like an Indian style, like I said before. Since I knew that a lot of Indian things were on round gold plates, I put a round gold plate around it."

"I might do Monart next year, I'm hoping to, but who knows? So, see you next year, (if I'm going to be here next year!)"

Here's Jonathan in the T-Shirt he made.
